PGA offers OTT service to golf fans

Golf fans are rejoicing because of PGA TOUR LIVE, the Professional Golfers' Association of America Tour's subscription streaming service. The PGA announced the service in April of this year and launched it in time for the Quicken Loans National in July. PGA TOUR LIVE allows fans to view golfers from the beginning of the tournament to the end live for the first time ever. The service is available to iPhone and iPad users as well as those watching via desktop and laptop computers. The service has a free seven-day trial period and then costs $4.99 per month, according to the PGA Tour's website. The PGA TOUR hopes the new live coverage will entice new fans and expand viewership on other platforms.

"We're confident that this exclusive coverage of marquee groups, alongside our Thursday and Friday Golf Channel telecasts, has strong potential to build fan interest and viewership for our traditional television coverage," said Rick Anderson, PGA Tour Executive Vice President, in an article by Sports Video Group.

"Streaming service will eventually come to other devices like Xbox, Playstation and smart TVs."

The PGA TOUR LIVE is limited. The streaming service covers only two groups of competitors from their morning tee-off. However, viewers  can watch those groups from the very first hole to the last, and they can do so easily from whatever device they want to use. iPhone and iPad users can download the app from the app store, and desktop and laptop users can reach the streaming service through PGA TOUR LIVE's website. Streaming service will eventually come to other devices like Xbox, Playstation and smart TVs. As advancements are made, the PGA TOUR LIVE will be made available to more countries around the world. The U.S., Canada, Australia, the United Kingdom and Ireland are currently the only countries that can use the service.

To create the streaming service, the PGA Tour teamed up with MLB Advanced Media. MLBAM is known for streaming MLB games to fans with great success. The PGA Tour and MLBAM began a partnership for the development, production and distribution of PGA TOUR LIVE.
